About Diabetes:

  • Diabetes is a chronic, debilitating disease affecting
    every organ system.

  • Type 1 (juvenile) diabetes strikes children suddenly,
makes them dependent on injected or pumped insulin
for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating
    complications.

  • To stay alive, people with type 1 diabetes must take
multiple insulin injections daily or continually infuse
insulin through a pump, and test their blood sugar by
pricking their fingers for blood six or more times per
day. While trying to balance insulin doses with their
food intake and daily activities, people with this form of
diabetes must always be prepared for serious
hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) and hyperglycemic
(high blood sugar) reactions, both of which can be life-
    limiting and life threatening.

  • While insulin allows a person to stay alive, it does not
cure diabetes nor does it prevent its eventual and
devastating effects: kidney failure, blindness, nerve
damage, amputations, heart attack and stroke.

Meet Nicholas
Nicholas is our 5-year-old
bundle of joy.  When he was
1-year-old, he was diagnosed
with juvenile diabetes (type 1).
 Although he must be closely
monitored both night and day,
he lives a fairly normal life with
his older brother and two
sisters.

For three years, Nicholas
would receive 6-8 finger pricks
and 4-6 injections of insulin
every day in order to keep him
alive and healthy. Recently,
however, thanks to God and
the generosity of others,
Nicholas has received a much
needed insulin pump.  The
pump eliminates the need for
the painful daily injections,
and it regulates his blood
sugar levels much more
efficiently.

Nicholas still wishes that he
did not have diabetes, and
does not like "feeling sick"
when his blood sugar is too
high or too low.  He and his
loving family are desperately
hoping, searching, and
praying for a cure for him and
for others like him!
